How should Balikbayan boxes and cargo shipments be packed?

To package items securely you'll need:

  • A Sturdy and Durable Shipping Box
  • Brown Packing Tape ("Duct tapes" are not recommended since they tend to peel off in humid climates)
  • Heavy Duty Garbage Bag or Bin liner
  • Scissors
  • A Packing List
  • Marker pen
  • Lightweight Padding Materials ("Bubble pack" etc.)
  • Watertight Plastic Bags for liquid and bottled items

Do not make boxes too heavy for easy and safe handling. If necessary spread heavy items into several boxes.

Next, follow these steps:

1. Use a durable carton or box if no Jumbo Box or Balikbayan box is available in your area.

2. Tape the bottom flaps of the box using Packing Tape. Keep the top flap open.

3. Place a heavy duty plastic garbage/bin liner bag inside the box to act as a liner, keeping the opening of the plastic bag at the top.

4. Prepare the packing list and write down the items as you place them inside the box.

5. Begin packing by placing neatly folded items that will serve as a cushion such as clothes, pants, curtains, and the like.

6. Protect other items in case of spillage by placing bottled and liquid items like shampoos, conditioners, colognes, perfumes, and the like in individual, tightly-sealed plastic bags. Secure the caps and lids of all liquid containers with tape before placing them inside the plastic bags.

7. Maintain a neat and secure stack and use manufacturer's packaging for fragile items. Put soft items between hard ones or use padding materials to provide a cushion between them.

8. Place padding materials along the sides and cushion and fill the top and any remaining spaces with more padding.

9. Secure the plastic garbage/bin linerbag with a knot or tape.

10. Place a copy of the packing list on top of the plastic garbage/bin liner bag before closing the box. Make sure you use a copy since the original form is needed for documentation purposes.

11. Secure the top flaps and any unsealed edges with tape.

12. Legibly mark down the box with shipper's and recipient's information using a permanent marker. To facilitate safe and speedy delivery make sure to provide the recipient's:

  • Full name
  • Complete address
  • Telephone numbers (including cell/mobile and/or landline)
  • If possible, a map sketch for very hard to find destinations

All shipments are subject to professional random inspection by us or Philippine Bureau of Customs.

Items that are never allowed inside your Balikbayan box:

  • Currencies/cash
  • Checks/cheques
  • Money orders
  • Travelers checks/cheques
  • Jewelry
  • Firearms
  • Ammunition
  • Reloaders
  • Explosives
  • Drugs and other prohibited substances
  • Lewd, obscene and pornographic materials
  • Perishables
  • Gambling cards
  • Toy guns
  • Goods in commercial quantities
